Symbiosis

(the game's main site can be found at http://www.red-comedy.net/symbiosis/)

In the Fall of 2007, I worked on the game design team for Symbiosis. Unlike most 3d adventure games, the game focused on the cooperation and coordination between two player-controlled characters. The players communicated over a network, but the game's interface did not allow them to talk to one another or interact "outside of the game." This restriction forced the players to communicate using a gesture based system unique to each of the two characters, which served as a rather unique and untested gameplay mechanic.

My role in the team was mostly artistic, although each member of the team contributed to the game's overall design. As a 3d artist, I helped create the world in which the game was played as well as create one of the main enemies of the game, the wolf shade. I learned many new things from this experience, as it helped me to understand 3d art from a more technical perspective. Issues such as material effects, scale, and animation timing became apparent as the artists attempted to merge their work with the programmers. It was a very good learning experience.
